47.8% of the Spanish population would agree to hold a referendum on monarchy or republic and up to would vote in favor of the second. This is clear from the macro-survey of the monarchy promoted by 16 media outlets, including Nuevatribuna , which today is published simultaneously in all the newspapers that make up the Independent Media Platform (PMI). With this survey, the largest that has been carried out in Spain on the monarchical institution, the debate, stolen until now from Spanish public opinion, about the Crown, the king and the State model is opened. Beyond the detailed data, which we will report in these pages, the study confirms that the monarchy worries and occupies citizens of one political stripe or another. The debate exists, although it is in the making based on some abstention percentages that must also be assessed.
As general opening notes, it is worth highlighting that young Spaniards are the most likely to see the monarchical institution pass scrutiny at the polls; that the right and the extreme right are the main support of the Royal House, while the left, with Unidas Podemos at the helm, champions the republican cause; that the scandals of the AOL Email List emeritus king have taken their toll; or that there are more who believe that Eleanor will not reign. Prepared by the opinion institute 40dB., directed by Belén Barreiro, former director of the CIS, the survey was carried out on a sample of 3,000 interviews with Spaniards over 16 years of age and with gender parity throughout the national territory. The project has been possible thanks to the contributions of nearly 2,000 donors in a crowdfunding promoted by the PMI that achieved its goal in just one day.
Pages of the report of the Spanish population wants a referendum on monarchy or republic, compared to 36% who reject it and 16% who do not speak out. The percentage rises to between 50-60% among the youngest , falling progressively from 60-65 years of age. figure 1 Asked what they would vote for if a referendum were held, 40.9% of the general population declared themselves in favor of the republic as a model of State, compared to who would support the monarchy. The remaining s divided between abstention and undecided. The youngest people continue to be by far the greatest supporter of the republican model.
