Might make them lose interest in the room and leave.

You know how you can grab an extra hat of the class you're playing? A priest can carry around a spare priest hat etc.
Each hat machine can only make three 'unused' hats like that, then it stops making any more until one of them disappears or gets used properly. If a few of you play ranger and just stand around in your base holding hats for a few minutes, the ranger hat machine won't make any new hats for the DSer (and unfortunately anyone who wants to legitimately play ranger) and they might get frustrated and leave.

Would be more effective on larger maps (on something like BF it's easy to run across to the other castle and take ranger hat from there) but might be worth trying.
